Meet The Parents

Trevis, my boyfriend, and I took the trip to Texas together so he can meet my family. I wasn’t worried because I knew they would like him, but last year it was a totally different story.

When I make a  big decision (sometimes small) I’m flooded with the who, what, when, where, and why a thousand times. I feel like I need to prepare a full powerpoint presentation including answers, examples, and pictures. My father is constantly asking me about my next move in the middle of my current move. He loves to ask me “what are doing after Kuwait?” and I’m thinking “I don’t even know what I want tonight for dinner.” So thinking about introducing my boyfriend to my parents was nerve-wracking because I didn’t want to be flooded with millions of questions.

I was also nervous because I didn’t want my family to stereotype him as a foreigner wanting a green card. As much as I love being American, it is not the only livable place on the planet. There are places all over the world that can afford you a good life, like Canada for example. My boyfriend doesn’t even need a visa to visit Canada. If it was up to him we would just stay in Barbados for the rest of our lives together. However, he is willing to move wherever.

The day he finally met my family it was nothing like I thought. We went on the 4th of July and ate, talked, and even played dominoes. It was almost as if he has been apart of my family for years. Later that week me, Trevis, my dad and nephew went bowling. My dad dominated the game of bowling, even getting a turkey at one point. However, when we decided to play pool Trevis unnecessarily beat my dad 3 times. I told him he didn’t have to do him like that!

As always it was nice to see my family and I’m glad they accepted Trevis. I knew they would like him.
